National Hispanic Heritage Month – Celebrating Dr. Jose Abrego, an Advocate for Chelsea Residents

October 13, 2020

Help ACHE of MA Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month!

This month we will celebrate by highlighting Massachusetts healthcare organizations, providers, leaders, and employees for their commitment to care for the Latinx community.

Dr. Jose Abrego has been with BIDHC since 2000 and is currently a Primary Care Provider and the Medical Director of BIDHC Chelsea Adult Medicine practice (where 25% of the patient population is Hispanic). During the pandemic, he advocated for Chelsea residents  through his volunteer work as Medical Director for the Chelsea COVID testing tent. Working closely with local leaders and hospital partners, Beth Israel Lahey Health Primary Care was able to secure COVID testing, SDOH services and follow up care for patients, family and residents.

In addition, Dr. Abrego was instrumental in working with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to change the Medical Center’s testing priorities to allow for asymptomatic community screening of all Chelsea residents, 66% of whom are Hispanic.
